The NTA will release the answer key anytime, and then the tense phase of counselling will start. As the NEET 2025 exam was held on 4th May 2025, the results will be announced on June 14, 2025, and then the counselling wave will hit the hopes of students.

The counselling rounds for MBBS will be conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), and these counselling rounds will include seat allotment, choice filling, and document verification. Let us take a look at the process of NEET UG counselling, what all you need for the counselling and how you can prepare yourself for the uncertain times.

NEET UG Counselling Rounds

There are typically four rounds in the NEET counselling. Each round has a fixed number of seats that get filled by a certain bracket of ranks. You get the chance of a free exit or an exit with forfeiture of the fee in these counselling rounds. Additional rounds may be conducted to fill any remaining vacant seats.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

Round 1: The first stage of counselling, where initial seat allotments are made.

Round 2: A follow-up round offering seats that were left unclaimed in Round 1.

Round 3 (Mop-up Round): Conducted to allocate seats that are still vacant after the first two rounds.

Stray Vacancy Round: The final chance to fill leftover seats not taken during the Mop-up Round.

Bifurcation of Medical Seats in Indian Colleges

First, let us understand the reservation of medical and dental seats. 15% seats are covered under the AIQ, and the remaining 85% seats are covered under the State quota.

From a pool of 100 seats, 15 seats are open to all the eligible candidates across India, meaning the AIQ (All India Quota). The remaining 85 seats come under the State Quota, which are reserved for the candidates who are domiciled in those particular states or regions.

As per the NMC, these educational institutes offer MBBS seats to NEET UG students:

  • Deemed Universities
  • Central University
  • Private Colleges
  • Government Colleges

NEET Counselling 2025 will start in July, after the seat bracket is finalised.

The Process of NEET Counselling 2025

Step 1: Register Online

Head to mcc.nic.in and register yourself using the NEET roll number, registration details, name, and date of birth. Pay the counselling and security fee online via the payment portal to confirm your participation.

Step 2: Fill In Your Choices

Make a preference list of colleges and courses (MBBS/BDS) on a dummy sheet before submitting.

Step 3: Seat Allotment Results

Log in to check your allotment status once results are out. Download your seat allotment letter. Remember:

  • Round 1 allows a free exit.
  • Round 2 exit leads to security deposit forfeiture.

Step 4: Report To The Allotted College

If you wish to accept the seat or be considered for upgrades, report to the assigned college with original documents. Reporting in Round 1 is optional, but mandatory in Round 2 to avoid losing your seat and deposit.

Prepare Yourself For The MBBS Admission

Now that you have understood the number of rounds in the NEET UG counselling and how the quota bifurcation is, its time to prepare yourself, physically and mentally, for the admission spree.

  1. Research Colleges & Cut-offs: Shortlist colleges based on your NEET rank, previous year cut-offs, location preferences, and course availability to make informed choices during option filling.
  2. Keep Documents Ready: Gather and verify all necessary documents like NEET scorecard, admit card, identity proof, Class 10 & 12 certificates, category certificates (if applicable), and domicile proofs.
  3. Understand The Counselling Process: Familiarise yourself with the official counselling schedule, registration steps, choice filling, fee payment, and seat allotment process for both AIQ and state quotas. Get in touch with a councellor for NEET UG for better chances of admission into MBBS.
  4. Make A Preference List: Rank your preferred colleges and courses in order of priority. Be realistic about your chances, but include backup options to avoid missing out.

Stay Updated & Alert: Follow the official counselling website regularly for updates, deadlines, and notifications. Delays or missed steps can cost you a seat.

Your Backup Plan If NEET UG Score Is Low

If you are still somehow left behind in this race for MBBS seat confirmation in the medical colleges/universities of India, then don’t lose hope.

Taking a drop might not be the best chance you have to become a doctor.

If your NEET score is low, you can still get yourself enrolled into MBBS course in countries like Georgia, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

Not only can you get an MBBS seat in an NMC and MCI-approved medical university but the tuition fee for these medical universities abroad is as low as 30-35 lakhs. Get in touch with our MBBS consultants if you also face the same problem and don’t want to waste a year.
